Causes of back pain-

The human back is made up of a complex structure of muscles, ligaments, tendons, discs, and bones, which work together to support the body and enable us to move around. Segments of the spine are cushioned by cartilage-like pads called discs. Problems with any of these components can lead to back pain.

Structural problems-

Back pain can also be caused by several structural problems.

Abnormal curvature of the spine– If the spine bends abnormally, back pain can occur.

Ruptured disc-  If the disc ruptures, there is more pressure on the nerve, resulting in back pain.

Sciatica A sharp and shooting pain that travels through the buttock and down the back of the leg, caused by a herniated disc pressing on a nerve.

Osteoporosis-The bones, including the vertebrae of the spine, become brittle and porous, making compression fractures more likely.

Movement and posture-

Taking a very sloping sitting position while working on a computer can increase back and shoulder problems over time.

Cancer of the spine-

A tumor in the spinal cord pressing against a nerve can also cause back pain.

Sleep disorders-

Individuals with sleep disorders are more prone to back pain than others.

Symptoms-

Some back problems can cause pain in other parts of the body depending on the nerves affected.

  • inflammation or swelling on the back
  • weight loss

Back pain treatment –

Home remedies-

Over-the-counter pain relievers, usually nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, can relieve discomfort. Applying a warm compress or ice pack to the painful area can also reduce the pain. Moving around will reduce stiffness, reduce pain, and prevent muscle weakness.

Medical treatment-

If home remedies do not relieve back pain, a back pain specialist may recommend medication, physical therapy, or both.

Medication: Codeine or hydrocodone, which are narcotics, may be prescribed for short periods. These require close monitoring by a doctor.

Physical therapy: After applying certain muscle-releasing techniques to the muscles and soft tissues of the back, pain may be relieved.

Yoga– this back treatment involves specific poses, movements, and breathing exercises. Some can help strengthen back muscles and improve posture. It should be kept in mind that back pain should not be aggravated by exercise.

Conclusion-

As we all know, back pain is a common disease, and the older you get, the more likely you are to experience it. With treatment, most of the back pain will get better on its own. Sometimes, you’ll need help from a doctor in the form of prescription medications or injections. In very rare cases, surgery may be required.
