Sandstone is generally porous and soft, and it will absorb a lot of water, which will cause staining. It is recommended that you seal sandstone with Stain Guarding Treatment. Trying to clean sandstone that is very dirty, mouldy or if it is very stained is not going to work very well, but regular cleaning will prevent this from happening.

Vacuum the surface to remove any dirt that may be present. Use a damp cloth or mop good quality microfiber and do not use any chemicals. With most sandstone being either honed or textured, using a string mop will make the job easier. You will need to use a bit of pressure to get rid of all the dirt and grime.

If you need to spot clean any spills, stains or marks, use a neutral pH chemical to clean the area. Remember to always rinse the surface after you have cleaned the area. Never leave sandstone to dry naturally, always use an old towel or cloth to dry the excess water off the sandstone surface.

This is necessary when Sandstone Tile Guys is very dirty, but should not be done if the sandstone has not been sealed. If you try to clean unsealed sandstone with this method, it will soak up too much water and end up getting stained.

Vacuum the surface to get rid of any loose dust and dirt. Scrub small areas of the sandstone with a solution of stone cleaner that is designed for sandstone. Use a soft broom or brush to work the solution into the pores of the grout and stone. Continue this process until the entire sandstone area has been scrubbed.

Leave the solution on the surface of the sandstone for a few minutes and then scrub the surface once again. Once the solution has done its job and lifted out the dirt, clean the liquid off with an old towel or dry mop. Pour water over the surface to rinse off the dirt and then dry the sandstone surface off with a towel or mop. You could also get a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to suck out all the remaining moisture from the sandstone. A dehumidifier will also work very well to dry the sandstone.
